1942-11-01

HEMSWELL

No operations were ordered for this day, but other occupations were as follows at 15.00 hrs a day rememberence service was held at NEWARK cemetry, the O.C. of Headquarters No. 1 Group was present, and also the O.C. Polish Airforce. No other activities took place.

1942-11-02

HEMSWELL

Once again no operations were ordered, but a lecture on anti a/c artillery took place which lasted 1 hour. 32 officers and N.C.Os. attended.

HEMSWELL

7 a/c were detailed for GARDENING operations which was successfully carried out, and all a/c returned safely. There was also an a/c tests, 1 Compass Swinging, a link trainer practice in which 4 attended, also Cock-pit drill, attendance 5.

Operations did not take place, other occupations were, a/c inspection, and an Aldis Lamp demonstration which lasted for ½ hour, 8 attended. Range estimation, the attendance was also 8. Cock pit drill, and 3 Link Trainer practices.

No operations. Other occupations were, a/c inspection, and an Aldis Lamp demonstration which lasted ½ hour.

HEMSWELL

A/C did not take place in any operations, other duties were, Range shooting, 25 yards, which lasted 1 hour. 500 rounds of ammunition was used. Cock pit drill lasting ½ hour, 15 attended. 5 a/c took part in a cross country flight. 1 a/c single engine flying. Checking the Loop scale and 2 Link Trainer practices.

HEMSWELL

5 a/c were detailed for mine laying which was successfully carried out. Aircraft “G” was cancelled wing & Engine Trouble. All our a/c returned safely. Other activities for the day were as follows, air to air firing, in which 2 a/c took part. 1 a/c in fighter affiliation, 3 a/c tests, 2 cross country flights, another a/c on Lorenz practice, and 1 a/c on circuits and landings. A/C inspection, and finally night flying.

Minelaying operations were ordered in which 5 a/c took part, there was also 1 a/c in a cross country flight, 4 a/c tests, a/c recognition, a/c inspection, and night flying.

HEMSWELL

5 a/c were detailed to att HAMBURG. Other occupations were as follows, 2 a/c on cross country flights, a/c inspection, a lecture for air gunners which lasted for an hour and 15 were present. Night flying was ordered for 1 a/c, but was cancelled.

HEMSWELL

Nil operations were ordered, but 2 a/c tests took place, 1 on a cross country flight an a/c inspection, range shooting practice at 25 yards which lasted an hour. 15 were present. Cock pit drill for air gunners. 15 were present, this also lasted an hour. A link trainer practice was held and 5 attended, there was also a lecture on pigeons.

HEMSWELL

Mine laying operations were ordered and 3 a/c took part. Other occupations were as follows, Squadron paraded in the morning and went to the Station chapel on the occasion of the anniversary of Poland’s Independence day. In the evening a meeting was held to commemorate this day. An a/c inspection took place, a lecture on a/c recognition which lasted an hour. 15 were present. Range estimation lasting 1 hour. 15 attended. Lecture for air gunners which lasted 2 hours and 25 attended. A lecture on tactics on daylight operations was given to crews. 1 a/c was detailed for instrument practice flying and Lorenze practice. 1 a/c tested.

1942-11-12

Nil operations. Other occupations for the day were as follows, range shooting 25 yards lasting an hour. 15 attended. Cock pit drill for air gunners lasting 1 hour. 15 were present. 6 Link Trainer practices and an a/c inspection.

HEMSWELL

No operations were ordered, the rest of the day was spent as follows, 4 a/c took part in a cross country flight, 2 a/c on instrument flying, 1 a/c on air to sea firing, and 2 on height test. 3 a/c on w/t tests, clay pigeon shooting in which 15 attended, this lecture was of 1 hour’s duration. Cock pit drill for airgunners lasting 1 hour, 15 present. Demonstrations were held for 10 airgunners, the duration of which was 1 hour. A lecture on day night fighters. a/c inspection.

1942-11-14

HEMSWELL

7 a/c were ordered for operational duties, but were cancelled at 16.45 hours. Other activities for the day were a/c recognition, 1 hour, and 15 were at this lecture. Range estimation. Aldis lamp demonstration. A lecture on fighters. 7 Link Trainer practices, and a/c inspection.

Minelaying operations were detailed for 6 a/c. In the morning Holy Mass. a/c tests in which 3 a/c took part. 2 a/c were on Instrument flying and Lorenz practice. a/c inspection.

HEMSWELL

4 a/c were instructed for minelaying operations. Other duties were as follows. 2 a/c on testing, 1 a/c on height test, 1 detailed for Instrument flying and Lorenze practice. A lecture for 15 airgunners for the duration of 1 hour. Aldis Lamp demonstration for 15 airgunners, 1 hour. 2 a/c on Link Trainer practices, a/c inspections.

1942-11-17

HEMSWELL

Operations were not detailed for this day. 1 a/c was on automatic pilot flying, 1 on in clouds flying, 2 on Lorenze practice, and 1 on cross country flight. Clay pigeon shooting was detailed for 15 aircrew, this lasted 1 hour. Loop Scale in which 1 a/c was detailed (a/c “K”) Oral trade tests were held for W/OPS. Morse practice. a/c inspection. Night flying and search light co operation.

HEMSWELL

Operations for 5 a/c were detailed, but this was cancelled at 16.30 hours. Other occupations were, 5 a/c on Link Trainer practices. a/c inspection.

1942-11-19

HEMSWELL

4 a/c were detailed for daylight operations, and 4 a/c were ordered for night operations. The daylight operations were cancelled at 09.00 hours, and the night ones were cancelled at 16.30 hours. 1 a/c test, a/c recognition. 15 aircrew were detailed to attend the 25 yard shooting rang which was of 1 hours duration. 15 attended Cock pit drill lasting 1 hour. a/c inspection.

1942-11-20

HEMSWELL

Operations were ordered, and 6 a/c were detailed to attack TURIN. The rest of the day was taken up by, 2 a/c took part in fighter affiliation. 2 on air to air firing, 2 a/c tests, 4 a/c were detailed for instrument flying, 2 single engine flying, there was also 2 a/c on Lorenze practice, 8 a/c on cross country exercise, cock pit drill and an a/c inspection. Congratulations were received from the A.O.C. Headquarters No 1 Group for having no armament failure for the months of October and September 1942.

1942-11-21

HEMSWELL

Daylight operations were ordered for 3 a/c to take place the next day. Other occupations for this day were as follows, 2 a/c on air to air firing, cloud flying and Lorenze practice in which 1 a/c took part, 2 were also on Instrument flying, as well as 7 a/c on a cross country flight. 10 aircrew spent one hour on a/c recognition, also 10 were on range estimation for the same length of time. The day was finished with an a/c inspection.

HEMSWELL

The operation that were ordered on thenprevious day were cancelled, instead 7 A/C were detailed to attack STUTTGARE. There was Holy Mass, then 8 a/c were sent on a cross country flight, 1 a/c on circuits and landings, and 1 on on Lorenz practice, Instrument flying, and automatic pilot flying. 10 attended cock pit drill for 1 hour. 2 link trainer practices ordered, a/c inspection.

1942-11-23

HEMSWELL

No operations were ordered for this day. Other duties were, a cross country flight consisting of 10 a/c took place. From 09.00 hours till 11.30hours an aerodrome defence exercise was held in which 137 personnel of this squadron took part. 1 link trainer practice.

1942-11-24

HEMSWELL

Operation which were previously detailed were cancelled at 14.00 hours. 1 a/c was tested, and a lecture took place for airgunners, 15 attended, this lasted for 1 hour. A 25 yard shooting practice was held, the duration of which lasted 1 hour and 15 attended, 300 rounds of ammunition was used.

HEMSWELL

Minelaying operations were ordered for 5 a/c but just before take off 1 a/c was was cancelled. A clay pigeon shooting practice of 1 hour in which 16 aircrew took part. A lecture for airgunners, 1 hour 20 attended, dinghy, and cook pit drill for 16 men lasting 1 hour. Air to air firing, an a/c tests and 1 a/c on Lorenze, and auto pilot practice.

Operations. NIL for this day, but 1 a/c took part in a cross country flight, and 1 a/c was tested.

1942-11-27

HEMSWELL

Operations were ordered for the following day. Other occupations for the day were as follows. 3 a/c were tested, a 25 yard range firing practice for 7 personnel lasting 1 hour, 210 rounds of ammunition was used. Cock pit drill for 7 lasting for the same time, and Spot Light trainer for 1 hour for 7 personnel.

HEMSWELL

The operations ordered the previous day were cancelled, instead night operations were took place in which 5 a/c took part. 2 a/c were tested, a lecture on the defence of the aerodrome the duration of which was 2 hours and 30 attended. A parade was held for the presentation of awards, to both flying and ground personnel, the number amounting to 60 N.C.Os. and airmen.

Operations were ordered for 1 a/c but was later cancelled, night flying was also cancelled for the 1 a/c which had been detailed. In the morning, Holy Mass, and later 1 a/c was tested, 2 were detailed for a cross country flight, 1 on circuits and landings, and 1 a/c on Instrument flying and Lorenze practice.

Arrangements were made for operations for the following day but were cancelled later. The following activities took place during the rest of the day, 4 a/c were on Instrument and Lorenze practice, 2 on practice bombing, 1 air to air firing and cloud flying, and also a lecture took place lasting for 2 hours on fighter tactics, 15 attended.
