1941-07-09

Jurby

1500 – Sgt. Pilot Nowakiewicz took off for a training flight in Magister Aircraft. When 2 miles North West of Ramsey at 1,000 ft., and after ten minutes flight the engine ceased to function. He put the aircraft into a glide and endeavoured to restart the engine , but wi thout success. He was obliged to make a forced landing and when a few metres from the ground, he opened the flaps to reduce speed, and eventually ran into an earthwork, causing considerable damage to aircraft. The airframe was Cat. “C” and the engine Cat.”B”. Sergeant Nowakiewicw and his passenger, a Polish mechanic, apart from slight head and face injuries, were uninjured.

1715 – Sgt. Pilot H. Szope whilst flying Hurricane I aircraft V.6973, on an operational flight, baled out into the sea 5 miles South of the Calf of Man. The pilot was picked up by a rescue boat two and quarter hours later, but was found to be dead , death being due to drowning. The accident is presumed to have been caused through engine failure.

Postagram received from Headquarters, Fighter Command advising that 302 Squadron were to be transferred from R.A.F. Station Jurby to R.A.F. Station, Churchstanton on the 7/8/41. Information also received that this was to be re-equipped with Hurricane II aircraft.

Nine Hurricane IIB aircraft received and nine Hurricane I aircraft despatched.

1941-07-29

Nine further Hurricane IIB aircraft received and a further nine Hurricane´s despatched.

Note.
Nothing of further importance happened throughout last month. The aircraft of this Squadron were mostly engaged on Convoy Patrols. See Form 541 attached.
