1941-09-04

Warmwell

14.20 – Twelve Hurricane IIB´s took off from Warmwell at 14.20 hrs to act as high wing cover to Blenheims bombing oil ship and docks at Cherbourgh. On the return flight while flying at 14,000 ft S/Ldr Witorzenc (the wing leader) observed 2 ME 109´s at about 11,000 ft approaching to attack the Blenheims from astern. He dived and made a stern attack on one, opening fire from 250 yds closing to 80 yds. The e/a turned towards the French coast and S/Ldr Witorzenc did the same and gave it 2 bursts from 80 yds. Thick smoke and flames were then seen pouring from e/a which dived into sea. The weather was fair and visibility very good. The S/Ldr landed at Warmwell with the Squadron at 15.20 hrs. 1 ME 109 destroyed.

Twlve Hurricane IIB´s took off from Warmwell at 14.20 hrs to act as high wing escort to Blemhiems. At 14.55 while the Blenheims were bombing the target, P/O Sporny flying at 14,000 ft saw 2 Me 109´s at 7/8000 ft about to attack close escort of Whirlwinds. He made a ¾ attack from above one one giving short bursts from 220 yds and two longer bursts from 70 yds. After themlast burst e/a turned very slowly onto its back and commenced to dive with thick smoke pouring from it. P/O Sporny followed it down to 1000 ft but was then attacked by 2 other ME 109´s. He dived to 300 ft and flew ten miles inland before turning for home. The two e/a chased him labout 30 miles from French coast but were unable to reach him owing to Hurricane´s greater speed. The weather was clear and visibility good.
He landed at Warmwell, at 15.45. 1 ME 109 probable.

Churchstanton

8.30 – Whole Squadron and aircraft transferred from R.A.F. Station Churchstanton to R.A.F. Station Warmwell. Move completed by 23.59 hrs on 5/9/41.

1941-09-08

Warmwell

16.57 – 12 Hurricane IIB aircraft left Warmwell at 16.57 to provide cover to Blenheim bombers on return from attack on convoy. Wing flew in sectic of 4 line abreast, 302 Squadron on port and 317 Sqdn on starboard. They crossed the Channel at zero feet on sighting French coast climbed to 5/6000 ft leaving Cap de la Hague they wont as far South as Sark and passing over N.W. corner of Guernsey returned direct to Warmwell, and landed there at 17.55 hrs. No flak, and no friendly or enemy aircraft were sighted. Visibility was bad.

Warmwell

15.55 – Accident to Sgt Pytlak, flying Hurricane IIB Z3676.
Pilot was carrying out shooting practice at an aeroplane silhouete suspended between two pylons. The a/c struck one of the pylons, probobly through an error of judgement on the part of the pilot. The a/c was damaged and the pylon broken. The a/c plunged into the sea and sank immediately. The body of the pilot was recovered.

1941-09-28

Warmwell

15.00 – Sgt . Pilot Tiahnybok flying Hurricane IIB aircraft No. Z.3674 was carrying out acrobatics and battle flying over base. After approximately 15 minutes of such flying and being on the north side of the aerodrome on order was given over the R/T for the Squadron to from formation. The pilot was flying at 12000 ft and dived to rejoin Squadron and got into a flat spin. He was unable to pull out and when down to 5,000 ft. he decided to bale out. He bales out inward to spin and dropped for some time without opening his parachute and finally opened it at approximately 1,000 ft., and made a successful parachute landing. He landed about 450 ft. from his aircraft, which, until the end continued its flat spin. The pilot was uninjured.

1941-09-30

Bolt Head

1520. – Sgt. Budrewicz made a faulty landing in Hurricane IIB. Z.3983, whilst operating from Bolt Heat Landing Ground. The aircraft was only very slightly damaged and the pilot uninjured.

Intensive air training was carried out in the first half of September , whilst this Sqdn. was at Warmwell.
