1944-10-01
R.A.F. BRENZETT
Throughout today, the Squadron pilots carried out aircraft tests and training flying, which included Formation and Clouds Flying. No Operational Flying was undertaken.

R.A.F. BRENZETT
Pilots carried out a Fighter Sweep, in the afternoon – Rodeo No. 405. This mission was carried out as planned and pilots landed back at base with little to report. Details of the flight are shown in Appendix.

Very little flying was undertaken today as the weather was too bad. A total of six aircraft tests were managed however – this was the only flying done.

The only flying carried out today consisted of a further two aircraft tests over Base in the afternoon.

In the morning our pilots participated in Ramrod No. 1313 – acting as penetration and withdrawal cover to Bombers which were bombing WILHELMSHAVEN. This mission proceeded as planned and apart from one pilot – F/Lt Beyer, A – who had to return to Base early due to engine trouble – it was uneventful. Other flying carried out through the day consisted of local sorties in Mustang and Auster aircraft. P.76695 F/Lt M. Gorzula proceeded on posting to P.A.F. Depot Blackpool supnmy. pending disposal wef: 22/9/44.

Our pilots carried out a further Fighter Sweep in the afternoon – Ramrod No. 1318. One pilot returned to Base early with engine trouble: apart from this the Operation was without incident.

In the morning pilots carried out several aircraft tests. At 10.15 hrs two pilots were ordered to “Scramble”. These pilots patrolled over Base without incident until recalled by Operations at 10.50 hrs.
In the afternoon pilots were ordered into the air for Operation Ramrod No. 1316 – another escort mission. Wing pilots escorted Lancasters which were bombing a bridge at KEMBS. The Operation was uneventful however: pilots landed back at Base safely. Aircraft piloted by P-781525 W/O Nowoczyn, W was hit by “Flak” but pilot carried on safely.

Further aircraft tests were carried out today. In the afternoon three pilots went to a landing strip near to AMIENS in their aircraft. They returned to Base later in the day.

The only flying carried out today consisted of one flight by the Squadrons Auster aircraft. The Advance Party of 133 Wing Headquarters proceeded by road in an M.T. convoy to the new Airfield at R.A.F. Station Andrews Field – Winter Quarters of 133 Wing and Squadrons.

R.A.F. BRENZETT
“A” Party of 133 Wing Headquarters moved to R.A.F. Station Andrews Field. 306/129/315 Sqdn personnel and equipment moved in a separate convoy to the new airfield. This small convoy of nine vehicles, under the Command of the Adjutant of 129 Squadron left Brenzett at about 1 pm and arrived at Saling at 20.00 hrs. This movement was carried out very well, thanks being due to the Convoy Commander, Flying Officer Madge. Squadron pilots flew the Squadron aircraft to the new “drome”: leaving the old Base at 14.45 hrs and arriving at Andrews Field 15.10 hrs.

No flying was carried out today. The entire day was taken up in settling in the new quarters. “B” Party arrived by road at 06.00 hrs having left Brenzett the previous evening.
Rain continued to fall all day.

08.25. Squadron pilots carried out Operation Ramrod 1328 from Base, escorting Halifax aircraft to WANNE EICKEL. This Operation was without incident and pilots landed Back at Base at 11.45 hrs.
Weather fine with good visibility.

In the morning pilots carried out several aircraft tests: in the afternoon they participated in Operation Ramrod No. 1331. Particulars of this mission are given in the Appendix. Pilots had little of interest to report on their return to Base.

Pilots carried out two Operations today Ramrods 1332 and 1333. These missions were carried out for the most part without incident. See Appendix. P-1753 F/O Gierycz, C returning to Base shortly after take off at 07.30 hrs for Operation Ramrod No. 1332 made a bad landing and the aircraft became Cat A/C.

07.35. 10 of the Squadron pilots and aircraft took off from Base for Operation Ramrod No. 1334 escorting bombers which were bombing a dam at ISERLOHN. Once again their mission was uneventful and pilots had nothing to report on “Touching Down” at Base – 11.35 hrs.
Two aircraft tests were carried out through the day.

Continuous rain all day curtailed flying today. But pilots managed to carry out three aircraft tests – the only flying undertaken.

Three pilots carried out formation and cloud flying over Base in the morning: no other flying being undertaken f\today. P-0660 F/Lt Schmidt was posted to 315 Polish Squadron at this “drome for duty as Flight Commander.

In the afternoon 13 pilots carried out Squadron formation flying over Base between 14.15 hrs and 15.20 hrs. These pilots carried out Homing and Clouds flying training on this sortie.
P-2440 F/O Kawnik, Z proceeded on posting to 309 Polish Squadron at R.A.F. DREM for flying duties.

14.30. 12 pilots of this Squadron took off from Base for Operation Ramrod No. 1344: once again acting as escort to Bombers. See Appendix. Two pilots returned to Base early. Apart from this the Operation was without incident. Pilots touched down at Base at 17.25 hrs approximately.

No Operational flying was undertaken today. But pilots carried out some considerable training flying throughout the day. This training consisted of Formations: Homing: Dusk and night Flying: Cloud flying and navigation exercises. Besides this pilots carried out further a/c tests.

14.25. 12 pilots took off from Base – Operation Ramrod No. 1347 escorting bombers. Landed Base 17.20 hrs.

Throughout the day pilots carried out training flights. This training consisted of Formation and Cloud flying between 14.10 hrs and 15.25 hrs by six pilots. P-0718 F/Lt Kudrewicz, B proceeded on posting to P.A.F. Depot Blackpool wef: 25/10/44.

Six pilots carried out Dusk and Night flying training over Base between 17.35 and 18.45 hrs. No Operational flying was undertaken today.

14.30. 12 of the Squadron pilots took off from Base for Operation Ramrod 1348. This mission once again consisted of escorting bombers. These bombers were ordered to bomb KOLN. Our pilots provided escort as planned. No E/A were encountered and pilots had nothing to report on landing back at Base at approximately 17.30 hrs. See Appendix for further particulars.

Pilots carried out further training flying through today. Three pilots flew from 14.00 hrs to 15.10 on formation and cloud flying: a further three pilots flew from 15.10 to 17.30 on cross country and Homing exercises. One pilot landed at Coltishall and came back to base later in the day.
P-780701 Sgt Pilot Polczynski, J was reported to the Permanent War Rank of F/Sgt wef: 22/9/44.

10.30. 12 pilots took off from Base for Operation Ramrod No. 1352 – escorting Lancaster aircraft which were bombing WESSELING. Trip was without incident and pilots landed safely at Base by 13.20 hrs.

R.A.F. ANDREWS FIELD
13.30. 12 pilots taking off from Base escorted Heavies to the Ruhr once again. Operation No. 1335 Ramrod. Four aircraft lost the formation when flying thriugh thick clouds on the way to target. These pilots returned to Base early. Other pilots carried out their mission for the most part without incident – although there was some considerable flak encountered on this sortie: landing Base by 16.45 hrs. Pilots also carried out aircraft tests through the day.
