1944-11-01

ANDREWS FIELD

Throughout the day our pilots carried out considerable training flying. Training included air to air firing: Squadron formation over Base and later: cloud flying. After dusk pilots continued training and practised night take-offs, landings, and local night flying over Base. There was no Operational flying.
P-2814 P/O Krzehlik, E and P-2801 P./O Berezowski, F arrived on posting from P.A.F. Depot at Blackpool for flying duties.

ANDREWS FIELD

12.20. 12 Squadron pilots and aircraft took off from Base for Operation Ramrod 1357 – See Appendix – landing back at Base at 15.20 hrs.
Non-Operational flying today consisted of an aircraft test and local flying over Base.
P-76795 F/Lt Tomanek, E – pilot who was reported “Missing” wef: 23/6/44 – now reported by Air Ministry to be a Prisoner of War – date unknown.

ANDREWS FIELD

Squadron pilots carried out a night flying programme. Seven pilots participated: their training consisted of local sorties, and reccos. with lighthouses and beacons in Base area, between 04.30 and 05.05 hrs without incident. P-1753 F/O Gierycz, C was posted to P.A.F. Depot wef: 2/11/44 and proceeded today.

ANDREWS FIELD

12.30. Squadron pilots – 12 in all – Took off Base and escorted 180 “Heavies” to SOLINGEN in Operation Ramrod 1359. Our pilots had nothing to report on “Touching down” at Base at 15.50 hrs approx.
-1.20. Nine of the Squadron pilots carried out further night flying training over Base: landing by 02.40 hrs. Night flying training consisted of take offs: landings: in quick succession: Sector reccos: Navigation and Homing. The programme was completed without event. Through the day several aircraft tests were completed. P.784331 W/O Pilot Krupa, W was posted supernumerary N/E Sick to R.A.F. Andrews Field whilst a patient at East Grinstead Hospital – effective wef: 22/9/44.

ANDREWS FIELD

11.30. Squadron pilots took off again from Base: escorting Lancasters to SOLINGEN once again in Operation Ramrod 1360. Aircraft piloted by F/O Grzybowski, L was hit by “Flak” and pilot was forced to land on the Continent, he was, however, uninjured. Another of our aircraft had engine trouble when on the Operation. The pilot F/Lt Siekierski, J had to return to Base, early. Squadron landed at Base by 11.20 hrs. There was no other flying today.

12.40. Seven pilots and aircraft of 306 Squadron, taking off from Base took part in Operation Ramrod No. 1361 and landed without incident at Base on their return at 15.45 hrs Full details of this Mission are given in Appendix “A”.
17.20. Four of our Squadron pilots carried out a further night flying programme until 18.20 hrs. Aircraft tests and other local flying completed flying for the day.

19.20. Seven of the Squadron pilots and aircraft carried out night flying training: landing at approx. 20.30 hrs and without event. This was the only flying carried out today. P.1899 F/Lt Tronczynski, S reported on posting from P.A.F. Depot wef: 4/11/44. P.780965 W/O Pilot Rogowski who was admitted to R.A.F. Hospital Cosford on 3/11/44: was discharged today,.

09.00. Seven pilots of 306 Squadron took off from Base for Operational Ramrod No. 1362 – landing Base 12.10 hrs. See Appendix “A” for details. Other flying included two aircraft tests.

09.05. Ten pilots from this Squadron were occupied with Operation Ramrod 1365 – particulars shown in Appendix: landing at Base on return at 12,30 hrs approx. Further night flying was undertaken.

Bad weather kept the Squadron aircraft on the ground toady. One pilot however managed to complete an aircraft tests – this was the only sortie made. Mr. W. KISIELEWSKI of the Polish Ministry of Information visited the Squadron and made notes on the Squadrons achievements in the last few months.

Flying carrier out today consisted of three aircraft tests and two local flying sorties. There was no Operational flying today. P-1594 F/Lt Budrewicz, R who was reported “Missing” wef: 23/6/44 was officially reported as prisoner of War wef: 10/7/44 by Air Ministry.

Flying today consisted of camera gun exercises by 10 pilots throughout the day.
P-1303 F/Lt Wisiorek, J after taking off for camera gun exercises had trouble with his a/c in the hydraulic system. After making several attempts to correct his faulty hydraulic system, whilst in the air – he decided to land. On inspection after touching down – the a/c was re-categorised “Cat A/C”. Pilot was unhurt.

Weather held up flying today. Constant rain kept the aircraft on the ground and no flying was undertaken. P.781525 W/O Pilot Nowoczyn, W proceeded on posting to P.A.F. Depot Blackpool wef: todays date – having completed his first Operational tour.

Bad weather again curtailed flying today. One pilot however practised homing and cloud flying over Base for a period of 50 mind in the morning. There was no Operational Flying.

Our pilots took part in Operation Ramrod 1374 – details in Appendix “A”. Non Operational flying consisted of Cloud and homing training in the area of Base. P.784855 F/Sgt Mrozowski, W reported on posting for flying duties from P.A.F. Depot Blackpool.

ANDREWS FIELD

Pilots took part in Operation Ramrod 1375 today. Non Operational Flying included night formation flying, aircraft tests, local flying. Pilots returned from BRADWELL BAY. They landed at that aerodrome after Operation Ramrod 1374 yesterday. When pilots were carrying out night flying training from Base: Sgt Pilot Hanka, Es aircraft had a burst tyre when pilot was taking off from the runway. Aircraft swung violently to port off the runway: and crashed heavily on to its nose on reaching soft earth. Pilot was unhurt but aircraft was re-categorised “Cat A/C”.

Pilots carried out further training flying throughout today. There was no Operational flying. P.1032 F/Lt Siekierski, J – Flight Commander of “A” Flight – proceeded on detachment to the Polish Air Force Staff College at R.A.F. Weston-super-Mare.

Further aircraft tests were carried out throughout today. No Operational flying was undertaken: nothing to report. P.1032 F/Lt Siekierski, J returned to the Unit on cessation of detachment to P.A.F. Staff College at Weston-super-Mare. P.1654 F/Lt J. Jeka reported on posting from P.A.F. Depot wef: 24/11/44.
