In the morning pilots carried out Close and Battle formation flying over Base, and after lunch they participated with 309/315 Squadrons in a practice transport escort. Local sorties and some aircraft tests completed the days flying. P.704948 Sgt Pilot Ryll, S reported back to the Unit on completing his Sentence at Military Detention Barracks Dundee.

133 Wing – 12 Pilots from 306 Squadron participating – took off Base 16.25 on the occasion of Their Majesties The King and Queens visit to the Channel Islands. The Wing flew in tight formation to Jersey. Over the Island they gave a “Fly Past” in salute and orbitted for some time. Their Majesties – in two Silver Dakotas – joined their formation and 133 Wing provided close escort from Jersey to Northolt aerodrome. Over Northolt, after the Dakotas had landed, the Wing gave another “Fly Past” orbitting for a while then returned to Base. Pilots landed at Andrews Field 20.10 hrs.

Pilots carried out Squadron formation flying and cine gun exercises and also practice fighter attacks. Nothing to report.

ANDREWS FIELD

13.20. 10 Pilots from 306 carried out Practice Rodeo No. 2. Taking off from Base Squadron flew to their “Target Area” Portsmouth. From Portsmouth they flew to WATFORD. Some Spitfire a/c were reported as following the Squadron. Our pilots made contact and dog fights ensued. During the combat our pilots claimed to have “destroyed” all four Spitfires without loss. During this sortie pilots encountered one single Lancaster and claim this also as “destroyed”. This practice was considered very good training for new pilots – ex O.T.U. pupils – who have just joined the Squadron. Pilots landed Base 15.25 hrs.

In the morning Squadron pilots carried out formation flying from 10.20 hrs to 11.20 hrs.
13.10. 13 Pilots took off from Base for Practice Rodeo No. 1 – Sweeping QUACKENBRUCKE drome. Squadron was led by F/Lt Sologub DFC. Arrived over Target Area at 15.00 hrs and saw a formation of 12 Tempests travelling West on the Port side at 15,000ft. 5 mins dog fight [ensped ] and pilots made a claim of “6 Tempests Destroyed”. On the way back pilots saw one Warwick a/c and one Thunderbolt over LE ZONTE and claim these also as “Destroyed”. Pilots landed Base by 16.50.

Pilots practiced interception, Squadron formation, photo attacks through the day, and later dusk and night flying. P.2724 F/O Budzich, T was injured and admitted to SSQ when his aircraft force landed near Lucas Farm Stebbing – aircraft Cat “E”. F/O Budzich was superficially injured on his face and legs. Cause of the crash was engine failure. Pilot made a skilfull landing in a cornfield entirely by use of instruments at 01.30 hrs a.m.
P.705501 Sgt Pilot Grabowski, J returned to the Unit from R.A.F. Hospital Cosford.
P.2891 P/O Berezowski, F and P.2816 P/O Lukasiewicz, K were Promoted to PWR of F/O wef: 1/4/45 Authority A.M.DGP/A/10/45 dated 6/6/45.

One pilot flew to Cosford for cross country navigation training and returned in the afternoon. This was the only flying undertaken by the Squadron. P.2476 F/O Smigielski, J reported on posting from P.A.F. Depot Blackpool Supnmy for Intelligence Duties.
A Bowser running around the Dispersal Pens caught one of the Squadron aircraft FX:922 and damaged it – Cat. A/C. Full blame for this accident rests with the driver of the Bowser.
P.2724 F/O Budzich was discharged from SSQ.
