Visibility by day was poor and flying was restricted to tests of readiness aircraft. Night weather conditions were very bad but as there was enemy activity four aircraft were sent on patrol after midnight. A fifth was unable to take off as visibility on the aerodrome was only 20 yards. Headquarters, No. 10 Group signal P.933 dated 1.7.42 advises the award of D.F.C. to P.O. Lissowski and the D.F.M. to F/Sgt. Illaszewicz.

Our pilot followed and gave a second burst from 250 yards but did not see any result. E/A dived very steeply but his turn was too sharp to follow and E/A was lost. Claimed as damaged, Pilot P.O. Podgorski, Observer (Radio) F/Lt. Sawczynski.
Day weather conditions were again poor and flying was restricted tonight flying tests of readiness aircraft. S.Ldr. Lewandowski, Pilot. P.O. Sliwak, Observer (Radio), and F.Ltl Kaluza, Pilot, F/Sgt. Serafin Observer (Radio) left the unit on posting to No. 54 O.T.U. for instructor duties. There was no night flying before midnight.

Exeter

In the early hours of the morning six Beaufighters were airborne for practiceflying. New tactics for the interception of enemy aircraft were practiced but as the weather closed down, aircraft were returned to base. By day weather conditions were poor with bad visibility and low cloud. Two Beaufighters were brought to readiness from 10.00 to 13.00 hours and four Beaufighters from 13.00 to 19.00 hours for army co-operation exercise “Cheddar”.

04.35 Beaufighter VIF. X.8131 crashed in the sea 15 miles S.E. of Darmouth. The pilot had reported that the port engine had failed and he was returning to base on starboard engine. A few minutes later he gave “emergency landing” over R.T. and nothing [Illegible] further was heard. Aircraft were sent out to drop flares and search for the crew but without success.
05.10 Beaufighter VIF. X.8027 landed and reported contact with raid 105 at 10.000 ft. but no visual due to clouds. Another contact was obtained without A.I. but was lost. The pilot was vectored on again as the raid was returning losing height and travelling very fast. When 1½ away from the raid and closing in our pilot had to abandon the chase as he had only 15 minutes petrol left. During the hours of daylight the search for the crew of Beaufighter X.8131 continued. Aircraft of this Unit and No. 247 Squadron with aircraft and vessels of the Air/Sea Rescue Service searched the area in the vicinity of the crash. The body of P.O. Lissowski was recovered from the sea but no trace of the pilot, F/Sgt. Illaszewicz was found. Day weather conditions at night were also suitable for flying and both training and operational flights were made.

02.30 Beaufighter VIF. X.7932 crashed in the sea three miles South of Bridport, the aircraft having got into a spin possible due to the loss of the starboard aileron. The crew, P.O.Podgorski and F/L. Sawczynski baled out from 3000ft and were subsequently resued by the Sea/Air Rescue Service. Beaufighters of this Unit led by W/Cdr Brejnak made an intensive search for the crew, located them and circled until the sea craft picked them up. The search was carried out by five Beaufighters flying in line at 500ft over a predetermined area of sea, in parallel lines.
