Visual was obtained 2 minutes later at a range of 1500 yards with e/a ahead and level. Pilot closed in slowly and fired two bursts, the first at 200 yards and the second at 150 yards. Strikes were seen in both cases and the first parachute was seen to open before the second burst. Starboard tank caught fire and two or three more parachutes were seen. The e/a recognised as a JU.88 sank slowly in flames and claimed as destroyed. Confirmation received from Observer Corps and Convoy “Stencil”. The pilot was then vectored on to a second raid at 16000ft and AI contact was obtained at 9000ft. e/a being well below and ahead. A chase ensued and visual obtained at range of 1000 yards. Pilot lost height and turned out to make a beam attack from starboard but was evidently observed by e/a as when Beaufighter came in, the e/a turned to starboard and the aircraft crossed. Our pilot increased speed and swung in from port but e/a repeated his manoeuvre and they crossed again at high speed, visual and contact being lost. Pilot, F/Lt. Neyder, Observer (Radio), Sgt. Wozny.

Weather was cloudy and E/A, at 12000ft was lost to view but AI contact maintained and a momentary visual was obtained at 9000ft but e/a was too close to port to fire. At 7000ft e/a again sighted at distance of 100 yards and our pilot was in e/a’s slipstream. He gave a short burst but did not see the result as E/A was lost in the cloud but still remained on AI. A few minutes later a visual obtained at 5000ft and closing to minimum range gave a long burst, the e/a being observed to dive towards the sea. The pilot saw his tracer bullets hit the e/a cockpit – there was no return fire. Observer (Radio) states that e/a dived very steeply towards the sea, and it is claimed as probably destroyed.
