A visual on JU.88 followed and our pilot lowered undercarriage and throttled back to reduce speed. The latter caused momentary flames from the Beaufighter exhausts and the E/A opened fire wildly from the ventral turret. Our pilot approached from port and below to 250 yards and gave a short burst. Return fire ceased but no strikes were seen. The E/A turned to port and opened fire from dorsal gun with two long bursts. Our pilot followed and came in to 120 yards dead astern and gave two short bursts. Strikes were seen on the fuselage and return fire ceased. E/A did a sharp diving turn to port and our pilot followed giving a fourth short burst from 120 yards. No result was seen and E/A disappeared into cloud. One JU.88 is claimed as damaged, our pilot Sgt. Pacholczyk, Observer (Radio) Sgt. Wieckowski.

Weather conditions by day were fair and training continued in the morning and night flying tests of readiness aircraft made. In the afternoon the celebrations of the Squadron’s second birthday commenced with a football match at St. James Football Ground, Exeter, between a team from the Squadron and one from “Q” Battery, 97th Anti-Tank Regt. This was followed by a march through the city of a detachment from each Flight headed by the Polish Military Band. At 17.30 hours a short Service of Remembrance to those who lost their lives was held in Higher Cemetery, Exeter and in the evening a concert was given on the camp for the airmen of the Unit. Weather conditions by night were good and operational flights were made. There was no enemy activity.

The Squadron today celebrates its second anniversary. General Sikorski, Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Forces was brought by a Beaufighter piloted by W/Cmdr. Michalowski from Northolt to Exeter. A mess was held at Dispersal at 11.00 hours, followed by investiture by General Sikorski and a march past of the Squadron. A fly-past of aircraft had been arranged but weather conditions became unfavourable and this had to be cancelled. The principal guests present were General Sikorski, C in C. Polish Forces: M. Nikolajczyk, Deputy Prime Minister of Poland; M. Strasburger, Minister of Finance; M. Stronski, Minister of Information and Propaganda; Mme Lesniowska, daughter of General Sikorski; A.V.M. Ujejski, Inspector General of the polish Air Force; Sir Cecil Dormer, British Ambassador to Poland; Mr. Hugh Dalton, M.P. President of the Board of trade; Mr. Frank Roberts, Foreign Office representing Mr. Anthony Eden, M.P.; and Col. Victor Cazalet, M.C. M.P. The Official ceremonies were followed by a co[nieczytelne]al lunch in the Airmen’s Dining Hall when guests, officers, N.C.O’s and airmen all had their midday meal together. Speeches were made by General Sikorski, Sir Cecil Dormer and W/Cmdr. Michalowski. A cocktail party was held in the Officers ‘ Mess when guests and officers had an opportunity of meeting each other informally, and this was followed by a concert in the Odeon Cinema, Exeter in aid of the Polish Army in Russia. The Following artist gave their services: prokopieri, (the Polish Bass); Cetner, (the Polish violinist); Szymonowicz and Szymonowiczowa (songs and piano); Grymska (Polish singer); Miss Lesley Duff (singer) and the Polish Military Band. This completed the Squadron celebrations. Sgt. Lipinski, Observer (Radio) left the Unit on posting to No. 219 Squadron. General Sikorski was flown back to Northolt by W/Cmdr. Michalowski in a Beaufighter aircraft. Weather conditions at night were non-operational and their was no flying.

Baufighter VIF. X.8005 landed and reported contact with E/A well below slightly to port and at a range of 9000ft. Our pilot closed and E/A opened fire from its dorsal turret at a range of about 1000 yds. Our pilot continued to close and a dog fight ensued and our pilot got in some short bursts and saw several strikes. After many manoeuvres the E/A straightened out and flew south with a trail of smoke coming from its port engine. In spite of return fire our pilot closed to 100 to 150 yds and aiming deliberately fired a long burst. Strikes were seen and almost immediately our aircraft was smothered with oil from the Hun. Our pilot pulled up sharply, circled the place and from the side window saw wreckage on the sea. His height was then 4000ft [nieczytelne] of using all the de-icing fluid in an attempt to clean the oil from his perspex our pilot could not do so and returned to base flying blind. One identified E/A is claimed as destroyed :- Pilot S/Ldr. Ranoszek, Observer (Radio) F/L. Sawczynski.
