1944-01-04

NORTHOLT

The Squadron did 2 sweeps – morning and afternoon, in each case supporting Marauders in attacks on “No-Ball” targets, N.W. France. There were no Huns on either occasion.

1944-01-05

NORTHOLT

308 Squadron helped to give withdrawal support to Liberators and Fortresses returning from long range bombing mission. The bombers were met according to plan and brought back but owing to petrol shortage, the Squadron landed at Ford, returning to Northolt later.

1944-01-07

Again the Squadron was detailed to cover returning Fortresses. Coming back, between Albert and Doullens some 10/15 F.W. 190s attacked the bombers. F/Lt. Najbicz opened fire but scored no hits and the Squadron landed without further excitement.

1944-01-08

At mid-day the Squadron made an uneventful sweep over the Some Estuary areain support of “Crossbow” operation. Later they made a much more eventful sweep to Rubens Hotel, S.W. – Squadron party. Everyone / ultimately ! / returned to base without loss.

1944-01-14

The Squadron wrere ordered to give escort cover in Ramrod attack by Marauders on “Crossbow” targets. In the St. Omer area about 10 mixed F.W. 190’s and M.E. 109’s jumped 308 from the sun. F/Sgt. Korwel opened fire and claimed one damaged 190. In the meantime F/Lt. Piotrowski announced over the R.T. that he had been hit and was on fire and was baling out. His voice sounded / this chronicler was listening at the time / calm and confident and although no parachute was seen in the melee, there is good reason for hoping that he got away. He would be at about 16,000’ when last heard. Shortly after landing, the Squadron were ordered to Coltishall and there they stayed until 20th – fogbound.

Uneventful escort cover was given to Marauders bombing “NO-BALL” targets in N.W. France. In the Amiens area some single-engined enemy aircraft seen but there were no engagements.

F/O. Tiahnybok who had been away since November recovering from a bad motor accident, returned to duty.

The Squadron did a “show” similar to the 21st, but were no incidents.

In the morning the Squadron again gave escort cover in a “Crossbow” Ramrod, landing at Bradwell Bay without incident. Later they were detailed to cover the withdrawal of returning Fortresses but as the bombers were not at Rendez-vous point, came back to Northolt.

There was an early morning show – Fighter umbrella over the “Crossbow” area. Nothing happened.

1944-01-26

The Squadron took off early for “Crossbow” operation but after a few minutes were recalled – bad weather.

1944-01-29

NORTHOLT

Fighter umbrella again over “Crossbow” target area but once more, there was nothing to report.
