1943-01-01

WOODVALE.

With no improvement in the weather, no flying could be undertaken.

1943-01-02

The weather being still very bad, no flying could be carried out.

1943-01-03

Weather has improved today and flying is possible. It consisted of Air to air firing and formation flying. Two aircraft of “A” Flight were scrambled to patrol the sector but no enemy aircraft were seen. Pilots and Mechanics today left for Valley, air to ground firing being carried out there.

1943-01-04

The weather has deteriorated and flying is once again impossible.

1943-01-05

In the morning one aircraft was tested. The weather became worse during the afternoon. Two sections were at 30 minutes available.

1943-01-06

Only one aircraft flew to Valley, no other flying today.

1943-01-07

Flying very limited to Z.Z. landing practices, a weather test and an aircraft test.

1943-01-08

Very limited flying which consisted of three sorties only. One for a weather test, one for an aircraft test and the third for aerobatics. No flying at all this afternoon.

1943-01-09

The flight which was going to Northolt was practicing “Rhubarb” tactics in fourteen sorties. Other flying for Z.Z. landings, aerobatics, and weather testing. The aircraft to go to Northolt were tested and everything is being prepared in order that the attachment should be a success.

Very limited flying indeed. Only one aircraft flew for weather testing.

1943-01-11

Flying training connected with the preparations for Northolt carried on. 22 sorties for air to sea firing practices. Other flying consisted of cine camera gun, low flying and low attacks.

1943-01-12

Flying limited to air to sea firing and a wreck at sea was used as a target. There were nine sorties for this practice. Two aircraft tests were made and an aircraft tested the weather both in the morning and afternoon. In the afternoon, when the preparations were at their peak for the ‘move” to Northolt, a message was received from the Station Commander to the effect that the “move” had been cancelled, for the time being at any rate.

1943-01-13

Extensive flying carried out. Thirty sorties for the following exercises being carried out: Air to sea firing, air to air firing, Squadron formation flying, and Z.Z. landings. Although night flying was planned, it could not to be carried out owing to the weather.

1943-01-14

Flying training continued. It consisted of Squadron formation flights, aerobatics and day D/F homing practice. In the morning two aircraft of “A” Flight were scrambled, they patrolled at different heights over the aerodrome but no enemy aircraft were encountered. Dusk and Night flying was carried out. Night D/F homing was practiced.

1943-01-15

Fortytwo sorties for the following exercises, were made today: Air to air firing, battle formation, dog fighting and cine camera gun attacks. Z-Z landings and D/F homing carried out in day and night conditions. Night flying, in which eight aircraft took part, was carried out and the last aircraft landed at 2125 hours.

1943-01-16

No flying today owing to the weather. One section was at readiness until 0915 hours and from then until 1755 hours / when the Squadron was released / two sections were at 30 minutes available. Twenty five sorties in all for different training flights. The main feature during daylight was Z-Z landing practices. Night flying and dusk flying was carried out and D/F homing practiced.

1943-01-18

It was very foggy today around here and thus no flying was possible.

1943-01-19

The weather continued to be unfit for flying and no flying was undertaken again today.

1943-01-20

With the improvement of the weather in the afternoon flying was undertaken. There were 15 sorties in all for different exercises, including formation flying, dog fighting and weather and aircraft tests. Two aircraft of “B” Flight were scrambled but they did not encounter any enemy aircraft in spite of an extensive search in this area.

1943-01-21

Flying training was continued. The main feature was air to air firing. Other flying was scramble, formation flying and aerobatics. In the evening night flying, although planned, could not be carried out. The six aircraft scrambled encountered no enemy aircraft.

1943-01-22

Flying had to be stopped owing to the weather. Only one flight today. One section at readiness for part of the day.

1943-01-23

With the improvement of the weather flying training was again carried out. Thirty sorties for different exercises comprising formation flying, dog Fighting, high flying and air to ground firing.

1943-01-24

WOODVALE

No flying today owing to the weather. The pilots had some “Link Trainer” instruction and went to the hunting range for some shooting practice.

1943-01-25

No flying during the morning owing to the weather. In the late afternoon, with the improvement in the weather, flying was undertaken. Three aircraft were tested. Night flying was planned, 5 aircraft practiced dusk flying whilst 5 others did night flying practicing D/F homing and Z-Z landings.

1943-01-26

Twenty two sorties for different flying training flights. It consisted of battle formations, formation flying, D/F homing, Z-Z landings, cine-camera gun practices and air to sea firing.

1943-01-27

Flying training carried out. Twenty one sorties made for formation flying, low flying, cine-camera gun practices, and dog fighting. Two aircraft scrambled did not see any enemy aircraft.

1943-01-28

Only one sorties possible owing to the weather. This one flight was made for aircraft testing, and lasted just 15 minutes.

1943-01-29

Thirty eight sorties made for different flying training. Cine-Camera gun attacks, low flying, and D/F homings carried out. Three Sections of “B” Flight were ‘scrambled” as a practice scramble.

1943-01-30

Flying training continued with Z-Z landings, formation flying, and cine-camera gun attacks. Night flying had to be cancelled owing to adverse weather conditions.

1943-01-31

The weather was very bad and flying could not be undertaken. Two sections were at 30 minutes available all day today.
