1943-02-01

WOODVALE.

27 Sorties in all during the day for different flying training flights, which included formation flying, dog fighting, Z.Z. landings.

1943-02-02

The weather was not very good. Inspite of this fact some training flying was carried out. – formation flying and low flying, D/F. Homings and Z.Z. Landings. F/O. Birtus landed after his training flight and while taxying his aircraft overturned. The accident was due to lack of air pressure in his brakes.

1943-02-03

The firing party has left for Valley for a four days course. Other flying included formation, dog fighting and D/F. landings.

1943-02-04

Extensive flying training. 43 Sorties for different exercises which consisted of Air to Air Firing, Battle Formation and Low Flying. Cine Camera Gun attacks on railways and interception practices.

1943-02-05

In the morning the weather was unsuitable for flying. In the early afternoon 6 aircraft went up for Formation Flying and Low Flying Attacks.

1943-02-06

No flying owing to the adverse weather which was unoperational.

1943-02-07

Training flying carried out. There were 37 sorties for different flights: Squadron Formation, low flying, local flying and practice interception. Signal received advising the squadron of its move to Kirton-in-Lindsey, on the 10th.

The only flying was 2 sorties. 2 aircraft flew to Calley to continue the gunnery course. Feverish packing owing to short notice of xxxxx move.

No flying owing to proposed move. Luggage loaded all afternoon.

1943-02-10

The Squadron left Woodvale officially at 08.00 hrs. Air Vice Marshal Witworth, A.O.C. No. 9 Group came to say Good-bye to the officers and men of the Squadron.

KIRTON-IN-LINDSEY

Aircraft could not fly owing to the weather to Kirton-in-Lindsey.

No flying owing to adverse weather conditions.

KIRTON-IN-LINDSEY

17 aircraft took off at 10.10 hrs. from Woodvale and arrived in Kirton-in-Lindsey at 11.15 hrs.

1943-02-14

Our squadron is not yet having “readiness”. Flying consisted of 13 aircraft doing Sector recco., and landings and take-offs in Hibaldstow a neighbourning airfields.

No Flying. 1 Sections readiness and 2 Sections 30 mins. available from 13.00 hrs. until 18.35 hrs. when they were released.

Although day flying was not very extensive, it consisted of 7 sorties for training flying and two operational scrambles each of 2 aircraft – night flying was very extensive indeed, 21.55 hrs. were flown and 20 sorties made. Last aircraft landed at 02.15 in the morning.

1943-02-17

The flying was limited to 6 aircraft landing in Kirton in the morning after last night’s night flying. In the evening 302 Squadron was planned for night flying, thus our squadron had to keep “readiness”. As the weather was not fit for flying “A” Flight was at 60 mins. available all night.

Extensive flying training carried out. It consisted of 30 sorties for formation flying, homing and interception practices. “B” Flight had “readiness” until 13.00 hrs. (1 section) and again from 18.45 hrs. had at 30 mins. and 60 mins. 3 sections available.

The flying is the morning consisted of 12 of our aircraft taking part in Wing Formation flying. In the afternoon Air to Sea Firing and one aircraft test was carried out. “A” Flight was at 120 mins. available all night.

The only flying for the day was 12 aircraft doing formation flying in the afternoon. “B” Flight three Sections were at 120 mins. available all night.

23 sorties for the following flights: Formation, photo attacks, local flying, air to air firing and aircraft tests. “A” Flight had three sections at 120 mins. available all night.

No flying owing to the fog. Three sections were at 120 mins. available until 08.00 hrs.

Very limited flying.

Training flying – Formation Flying and photo. practice – local flying, entailing 15.15 hrs. flying.

21 sorties for usual training flying – Squadron Formation, Air to Air Firing and Camera Gun attacks. “B” Flight had one section at “readiness” all day until 18.57 hrs. then released.

27 Hours Flying to-day including varied training flights, Formation Flying, Photo attacks, aerobatics, squadron formation and sector recce. “B” Flight had 1 section at “readiness” 1 section at 15 mins. and 1 section at 30 mins. available from 0728 hrs. until 13.00 hrs. then released.

Training flying once again entailing 23 hours flying. Formation camera gun attacks, Rescue Patrol, Formation Flying and Air to Air Flying.

Good weather once again gave the opportunity of extensive training flying – Air to Air, Air to Sea Firing, Photo attacks and Practice interceptioon, making in all 26 Sorties. Two aircraft of “B” Flight scrambled at 17.25 hrs. but landed again at 17.50 hrs. having encountered no enemy Aircraft.
