They say the wartime does not favour reporting, however, in the whole world millions of documents prepared during the wartime are stored in archives. Not everybody has access to them. Reasons for this are various — costs, distance, lack of time etc. Not every person interested in the documents – and not dealing with history professionally — can reach them. The website you are visiting now is supposed to change the situation, even if to the minimum extent only.
The idea was simple. Let us gather a group of people, enthusiasts of the Polish Air Forces history and with their help transfer “to the Web” the content of Operations Record Books (ORB) of the Polish squadrons fighting in the Western Europe from 1940 to 1945. Contrary to sceptical voices it turned out to be possible. I provided the documents, Piotr Mikołajski designed the website, and Volunteers submit copied texts. Let me emphasize that it is thanks to the Volunteers that this website exists and I already know that it will develop very dynamically.
The question waiting for an answer is why ORB? The answer is simple — documents of this type are the basic source of knowledge about the history of each unit. Let me emphasize — the basic source, which does not mean exhaustive one and without errors. Please bear it in mind when reading. It should be “the beginning of the path” and introduction to further search and extending the knowledge.
Another reason is the fact that these documents were written in English and so due to publishing them in original everybody who speaks the language can read about successes of the Polish units. This is very important — overcoming a language barrier enables propagating war history of the Polish Air Forces all around the world. For that reason the service has been created in English.
What else may I add? I would like to end the text with a reflection. Participation and coordination of this project, and above all the involvement of the participants, restores my confidence in the possibility — to say it colloquially — of doing something cool. So let us do it our way, not looking back to the past. The past has, admittedly, answers to many questions, but is does not decide about our state of knowledge about the past itself.

Czas wojny nie sprzyja ponoć sprawozdawczości, a jednak na całym świecie w archiwach przechowywane są miliony kartek dokumentów powstałych właśnie w czasie ich trwania. Nie wszyscy mają do nich dostęp. Przyczyny tego stanu rzeczy są różne — koszty, odległość, brak czasu, itd., etc. Nie każda osoba zainteresowana — a niezajmująca się zawodowo historią — może do nich dotrzeć. Strona, na której Państwo jesteście w tej chwili ma zmienić ten stan rzeczy, choćby w minimalnym stopniu.
Pomysł był prosty. Skrzyknąć grupę ludzi, pasjonatów historii Polskich Sił Powietrznych i z ich pomocą przenieść “do Sieci” treść Dzienników działań bojowych (Operations Record Books — ORB) polskich dywizjonów walczących na zachodzie Europy w latach 1940-1945. Wbrew sceptycznym głosom okazało się to możliwe. Ja udostępniłem dokumenty, Piotr Mikołajski zaprojektował stronę, a Wolontariusze dostarczają przepisane teksty. Trzeba podkreślić, że to dzięki Wolontariuszom właśnie, ta strona istnieje i już dziś wiem, że będzie się bardzo dynamicznie rozwijać.
Pozostaje odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czemu ORB? Odpowiedź jest prosta — dokumenty tego rodzaju stanowią podstawowe źródło wiedzy o historii każdej jednostki. Podkreślam — podstawowe, co nie oznacza wyczerpujące i pozbawione błędów. Trzeba o tym pamiętać przy ich lekturze. Powinna być ona “początkiem drogi” i stanowić wstęp do dalszych poszukiwań i poszerzania wiedzy.
Kolejny powód to fakt, że owe dokumenty były pisane po angielsku i tym samym poprzez ich upowszechnienie w języku oryginału o dokonaniach polskich jednostek może czytać każdy znający ten język. To bardzo ważne — zniesienie językowej bariery umożliwia rozpropagowanie wojennej historii polskich skrzydeł na całym świecie. Z tego też powodu serwis został stworzony w języku angielskim.
Cóż jeszcze dodać? Chciałbym zakończyć ten tekst jakąś refleksją. Udział i koordynacja tego projektu, a nader wszystko zaangażowanie biorących w nim udział, przywraca mi wiarę w to, że można coś — mówiąc kolokwialnie — fajnego zrobić. Tak więc róbmy swoje, nie patrząc w przeszłość. Są w niej, co prawda, odpowiedzi na wiele pytań, ale to nie ona decyduje o tym, jaki jest nasz stan wiedzy na temat jej samej.
